The Penn State Extension Lancaster County, Red Rose 4-H Beef Club members participated in a community service project over the past year allowing them to take care of the environment and give back to the community.
Penn State Extension Lancaster County, Red Rose 4-H Beef Club Collected 3,000 lbs of Plastic to Make Benches for Local Fairs
Club President Caleb Miller challenged the 50 members at the first Red Rose 4-H Beef Club meeting to reach out to local businesses and ask them to recycle their plastic.
Working with NexTrex Recycling Program, for every 500 lbs. of plastic the club recycled, they would get a bench made from recycled plastic. For each bench that NexTrex produced with the collected plastic produced, the club donated it to a local fair in Lancaster County.
At the end of the club year, members collected 3,000 lbs of plastic and donated six benches. The project gave five benches to Elizabethtown Fair, Solanco Fair, Lampeter Fair, Manheim Farm Show, and the Farm and Home Center.
The last bench is donated to the 4-H Benefit Auction to be sold on February 18th at the annual 4-H Auction. The Auction begins at 9 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center, and all proceeds benefit the Lancaster County 4-H Program.
