The Lancaster County 4-H Swine Club is for youth interested in a market hog project. The club meets once a month beginning in March. Members and leaders discuss topics related to market hogs such as properly housing and feeding your hogs. They also demonstrate how to prepare and show your hogs. Members and leaders can assist you with any questions you may have concerning your project animals. With the help of parents and leaders, members are responsible for selecting their project animal, providing housing, feed, and water to that animal, ear tagging the animal for identification, and acquiring the proper vaccinations and health certificates. As a club member, you are expected to attend the club meetings, participate in club fundraisers, and complete a record book for your market hogs. About Raising Hogs… All pigs to be shown at the Lancaster County 4-H Fair should be born around February, on feed, and in your possession by May 15, and properly identified by June 1. Each member may show a maximum of two market hogs at the 4-H Round Up. Pigs should weigh between 230 and 280 pounds to be eligible to show. Members are urged to participate in all meetings and activities, including the 4-H Round Up. Members also have the opportunity to exhibit their animals at their local community fair and the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
