Position Description: A research assistantship is available for a PhD student to work on agricultural safety and health related project. The student will be working with Dr. Serap Gorucu and will be working on Artificial Intelligence related project for agricultural safety and health. The University of Florida is a lead institution of the Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (SCCAHS). SCCAHS explores and addresses the occupational safety and health needs of people working in agriculture, fishing, and forestry in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Student also will gain practical and research experience working with SCCAHS faculty.

Possible research topics may include developing risk assessment tools to improve workers safety, using engineering controls for agricultural hazards, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning applications for agricultural safety and health. In addition to research/thesis expectations, opportunities exist for outreach activities with industry and stakeholders.

This research assistantship will provide funding covering a competitive stipend, tuition, and health insurance.

Anticipated start date: Fall 2021

Required Qualifications: Ideal candidate is expected to have a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related fields.

TOEFL: TOEFL is required for non-native English speakers.
