Summary: Program Associates operate in an independent, decision-making role in the planning & execution of programs. Work objectives are coordinated with Project Leaders and/or other supervisors, but project implementation & management are primarily the responsibilities of the Program Associate. Program Associates are expected to contribute effectively to conceptual framework, program design, result dissemination, educational activities, & the pursuit of extramural financial support.

Duties include some laboratory but mostly field activities in irrigation water management. Includes but not limited to repairing and installing irrigation equipment, planting crops, harvesting crops, spraying crops, retrieving information from data logging equipment, manual data collection, data summarization and analysis of field experiments. The employee must be able to perform physical work such as lifting a minimum weight of 50 pounds and operate ATV. The job also requires driving long distances and walking and working on cooperating producer farms. The main responsibility will be establishing Irrigation Water Management Demonstrations on cooperating producer farms and training farmers and other trainers about Irrigation Water Management Practices. This keystone program is demonstrating 27% reductions in water use with no yield penalties and an average of $511 per irrigation pumping plant from testing. The individual also will assist the water management engineer in development of materials for extension programs and research presentations and meeting the needs of stakeholders and funding agencies. Provide training for a mobile app developed for rice irrigation. If individual is trained as an engineer, duties would also include troubleshooting and design of irrigation system and components. Supervisor is a licensed Professional Engineer.

A BS or MS in agricultural or biological engineering, crop, soil, or environmental science, comparable engineering discipline, agriculture or related field is required. A high level of technical competence in irrigation. Ability to develop & deliver presentations. Ability to exercise initiative, make sound judgments, & work independently. Ability to relate & respond to the needs of supervisors, subordinates, & clientele.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's in Engineering, Mechanized Systems Management, Agriculture Technology Management, Agriculture, Environmental Science, agronomy, soil science, crop science or related technical agricultural or environmental field plus three years of related professional work experience.
Preferred Qualifications: M.S. in related field. Experience and /or knowledge of farming and familiarity with farm machinery, electronics, and irrigation management and equipment is desirable. Irrigation Engineering experience or formal training is highly desirable.
