Agricultural engineering researcher named Outstanding Alumnus by Penn State College of Ag Sciences

Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences has honored Renfu Lu, of Okemos, Mich., with a 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award. The award recognizes alumni for their achievements and provides opportunities for recipients to interact with the college's faculty, students and other alumni.

Since 2007 he has served as supervisory research agricultural engineer and research leader, for the USDA Agricultural Research Services, Sugarbeet and Bean Research Unit. In this position, he leads and manages the unit’s three federal research programs on development of innovative methods and technologies in engineering, genetics, breeding and pathology for dry bean, sugar beet, fruits and vegetables.

He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State.

Lu is a leading expert in sensors and sensing for quality assessment of horticultural and food products. He has made significant contributions to the development and application of spectral imaging and spectroscopic technologies for food-quality inspection. He has authored or coauthored more than 180 publications.

Lu received his doctorate in 1990 from Penn State in Agricultural Engineering. He has led and served on numerous American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers committees, and has received seven research paper awards from the society and one Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer Award in 2009.
