NWPCA Graduate Fellowship - Virginia Tech

Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech’s Department of Sustainable Biomaterials, in cooperation with the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA), is pleased to announce the availability of a Graduate Student Fellowship (stipend, benefits, plus tuition) at the Master’s Level for a very qualified individual.

The selected individual will – in addition to their coursework and pursuit of Master’s degree in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials – conduct research related to compression stresses on palletized pails and drums during all phases of unit load handling, storage, and transport. The graduate student will be provided office space within the Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design (CPULD), and research will be conducted within CPULD laboratories.

This is an exceptional opportunity: results of this research will be implemented in NWPCA’s unit load design software used around the world. Results of this research will dramatically improve both the safety and efficiency of unit load material handling. There will also be opportunities for this student to publish, to make presentations at conferences, and to represent CPULD at industry tradeshows.

The selected graduate student must have an educational background consistent with a B.S. in Packaging Science, Wood Science/Forest Products, Industrial Engineering, or an engineering degree in a discipline which includes course work on behavior and analysis of structures. This research will require hands-on work within a testing laboratory using multiple computer systems, software, and testing machinery. Processing and understanding testing results will require excellent data analysis abilities.

This fellowship is available August 2019. It is a 2-year graduate program and commitment.
