Changing the way we landscape….
The Native Plant Habitat Team, formerly MAEscapes, was created in 2003 to demonstrate conservation landscaping principles and techniques. The habitats created encourage diversity of native wildlife and have the additional benefits of lower cost and less maintenance. These ideals are appropriate for homes, schools, businesses and public spaces.
From 2004 to 2019 Master Gardeners developed and maintained beautiful demonstration gardens at our office at the County Annex building. With the move of Penn State Extension to a new office at 2401 Pleasant Valley Rd, many of the plants in the gardens were rescued and given new homes. Though the gardens are gone, the principles of landscaping are still as vital as ever.
Now a committee of the Penn State Master Gardener program in York, Master Gardeners on the Native Plant Habitat Team continue to offer education about conservation landscaping. We sponsor a spring native plant sale and a native plant tour in July. If you are interested in turning part of your yard into habitat for wildlife, Master Gardeners are available to offer you advice.
