Drought-Tolerant Garden

The Drought Tolerant Garden contains a wide variety of drought resistant plants and demonstrates xeriscaping, or the science of water-wise landscaping.

After drought conditions in 2001 and 2002, a class on the Principles of Xeriscaping was offered but had to be taught offsite. In July 2012, a group of Master Gardeners established the Drought Tolerant Garden. It is located in front of the Victory Garden fence between the Sun Perennial and Pollinator gardens. The first year required a fair amount of watering to establish the plants while subsequent years only new plantings needed extra attention.

Plants that are drought tolerant include agastache, catmint, sedum, spirea, amsonia, Russian sage, and salvia along with a few varieties of grasses. A number of evergreen shrubs were planted such as included arborvitae, columnar Mugo pine, and dwarf Norway spruce.

The garden is used for classes on xeriscaping and highlights garden design in a narrow bed.
