Join the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Susquehanna County for a day of learning. Registration is open for Spring Garden Day on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Gather and grow with the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Susquehanna County during Spring Garden Day. The program features educational sessions designed to provide inspiration and instructional how-to for home gardeners of all experience levels. Gain the confidence to grow small fruits. Grow your skills in caring for dahlia tubers. Learn the basics of growing vegetables hydroponically. Discover how to extend the growing season in hoop houses. Additional hands-on demonstrations include flower arranging and low-cost seed-starting methods. Attendees will receive a folder with horticultural information and garden seeds. The $36 program fee includes morning refreshments and a light lunch. A silent auction completes the day (auction accepts cash and check payments only).

Spring Garden Day takes place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Montrose Bible Conference (Lake Ridge Center). Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Advanced registration is required as space is limited. The registration deadline is Thursday, April 3.

Program presentations

Tender Tubers: Rachel Bennett will help grow your knowledge of tubers by sharing classifications, growing zones, planting, care, and storage, focusing on dahlias and elephant ears.

Once Upon a Time in a Hoop House: Stacey Kalechitz will offer guidance on the basics and benefits of extending the growing season in hoop houses. From set-up to harvest - let's talk hoop houses!

Growing Small Fruits in the Home Garden: Jim Kasten will present the best practices to grow small fruits, including blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Gain an understanding of site preparation, soil and nutrient needs, common pests and diseases, and considerations for growing in containers.

Getting Started with Hydroponics: Howard Burkett will detail the equipment needed to grow hydroponically at home. Hydroponic gardening may sound complex, but it's based on simple gardening principles.

U.S. Lawns: Guest presenter Don Hibbard from the Susquehanna County Conservation District

Demonstrations and Hands-On Learning: Master Gardeners will showcase the art of flower arranging and low- cost methods for seed starting.
