The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Susquehanna County recently hosted the annual Spring Garden Day in partnership with the Montrose Area Adult School. Interest in the program soared this year, with attendance more than doubling in size.
Spring Garden Day featured five presentations by Master Gardeners designed to offer inspiration and instructional how-to for home gardeners. Anson Hedges shared practical strategies for designing and maintaining an edible landscape. The history and art of topiary was the topic delivered by Ruth Malenda. Bob Owens described his experience using hay as a permanent mulch in raised bed vegetable gardening. Visiting Master Gardener Sandy Visintainer from Luzerne County led attendees to make seed tapes and bombs. Master Gardeners from the Broome County program of Cornell Cooperative Extension imparted the importance of incorporating native plants in home landscapes. Don Hibbard from the Susquehanna County Conservation District joined the program to present important information on deer ticks.
Master Gardener and beekeeper Catherine Hynes showcased honey products. Additional Master Gardener displays shared information on entomology and planting pollinator-friendly gardens. Attendees each received a folder of horticulture information and complimentary garden seed packs.
Master Gardener Apprentice Jerry Evans emceed the program, which closed with a silent auction. The Master Gardeners would like to thank the following local businesses and individuals for their contributions to the silent auction: From the Heart, My Cuppa Coffee, Laurie from Slanted Art, Vinne Quattrocchi, Hometown Finds, Lydia's Bake Shop, Chelsea Ungaro from Homestead on Maple, and gifts from many talented Master Gardeners.
