Seed to Supper program at St. George Orthodox Church in New Kensington. Mandy L. Smith, Penn State
The Penn State Master Gardeners of Westmoreland County are facilitating the Seed to Supper program in both Delmont and New Kensington during the 2025 spring growing season. The program is in its third year in New Kensington at St. George Orthodox Church, a food pantry site.
Seed to Supper is a shared program developed by the Oregon Food Bank's Learning Gardens and the Oregon State University Extension Master Gardener's Program in 2007. In January 2020, the program was adopted by Penn State Extension and has since been instituted by county Master Gardener programs across the state.
The purpose of the program is to instruct adults in how to grow vegetable gardens on a budget. With guidance from Master Gardeners, participants will learn all stages of successful gardening, from establishing proper soil health and garden plot planting to season-long cultivation practices and harvesting of crops.
The six-week program is free for participants, with instructional materials provided. Participants should be excited to learn something new and have the ability to commit to the project across the growing season.
In Delmont, sessions begin on Thursday, March 20, 5:30 PM at the Delmont Public Library, 75 School Street.
In New Kensington, sessions will begin on Thursday, May 8, 6:00 PM at St. George Orthodox Church, 1150 Leishman Avenue.
