How to prepare a 5-gallon bucket for planting.

  1. Clean and dry the outside surface of a 5 gallon bucket.
  2. Drill some drainage holes in the bottom.
  3. Leave it white or spray the bucket with multi-surface patio paint designed to stick to plastic.
  4. Let dry completely before continuing.
  5. Using multi-surface craft paint, decorate your bucket with simple designs.
  6. To further protect the surface, spray with a clear coat after the paint is dry.

For the Idea garden we used "FolkArt Multi-surface craft paint" and foam paint applicators.

The round foam applicators allow you to make perfect dots! Dip the flat round foam tip into paint, dot the paint onto the surface and twist slightly. Lift straight off to avoid smearing.
