The mission of the Penn State Master Gardener volunteer program is to support Penn State Extension by utilizing research-based information to educate the public on best practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship.

Thank you for your interest in the Penn State Extension Master Gardener Program in Allegheny County. APplications to the program are now closed. Selected applicants for the 2024-2025 program year will be contacted for an interview in early June. Those that are accepted into the program will be notified by the beginning of August.

If you have any questions about becoming a Master Gardener volunteer, please reach out to the program assistant, Marilyn Walsh at

Training begins the first week in October and continues through March. Classes meet virtually, weekly on Thursdays at 6 pm, except during holidays. There are also hands-on classes throughout the training, which will require in-person attendance.

Once you have applied to the program, you will be notified and scheduled for an interview during the summer. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applicants typically received, we cannot accept every applicant into the training program.

If you wonder if the training will meet your needs, you can find many copies through Carnegie and other local libraries around the area.
