Learn more about Nahenahe Rosario and how her Hawaii 4-H experiences are similar to Pennsylvania 4-H.

Nahenahe with her 4-H goat project
Continuing with the State Council theme "Be Different Together" Council Sentinel Maria Sipe talked with Nahenahe Rosario, 18, from Hawaii County 4-H, Hawaii. The Council wanted to highlight 4-H members from across the country and she was the perfect match. Nahenahe shares her 4-H experience and how it isn't as different as you would think from Pennsylvania 4-H.
During her 4-H career Nahenahe was involved in community service and livestock projects, all things offered in Pennsylvania. When asked how she heard about 4-H she said that she had heard about the program from her family. Her mom and cousins were all members so she decided to give it a shot. She said she joined 4-H because she was around it so much as a child and loved the community that it built. She also loved how much she was learning all while still having fun. Some of the things Nahenahe likes about 4-H is the family that it builds as well as how many opportunities are provided from the program.
She also says that 4-H has helped her prepare for her future. It has helped her to gain public speaking skills. She says before 4-H she was a shy person but once she started to become more involved in the 4-H program she came out of her shell and loved meeting new people and even teaching younger members. "4-H has helped with time management. Once I started raising livestock, I had to have a set schedule, so I had time to take proper care of my animals before school and sports. It helped me understand the importance of time management and keeping track of all of my responsibilities."
Nahenahe's advice to a young child who is unsure about joining 4-H is "4-H has been a part of the best years of my life. If I had never joined 4-H I would not have been able to meet amazing people from all over the country and grow connections, I never thought I would have. It has helped prepare me for going off to college and for my future in so many ways."
