Penn State Extension provided teens an opportunity to become prepared and informed environmental stewards of tomorrow!

In May 2022, the Youth Community Stewardship Project at the Tunkhannock Public Library, combined classroom learning with a hands-on community service component. Funded by a 2021 Department of Environmental Protection Environmental Education Grant, teens explored local environmental issues, practiced leadership behaviors, and promoted personal environmental stewardship and sustainability.

The students diversified the Library's garden with new native plantings to support pollinators and improved sustainability with the addition of a compost container and rain barrel. Educational signage at the demonstration site showcases to visitors the benefits of incorporating water conservation and soil health practices in their home landscapes.

Thank you to our Master Gardener volunteers, Extension Educator Linda Falcone, the staff of the Tunkhannock Public Library, and Laura Anderson of the Wyoming County Conservation District.
