The Lehigh and Northampton County Master Gardener Program will be offering training again starting October 2025. If you have any questions, contact Joe Veshinfsky jcv5092@psu.edu for more information.

How to Become a Master Gardener

The local Penn State Master Gardener Program is administered by Penn State Extension Lehigh and Northampton Counties where recruitment, training, and volunteer service occur. Master Gardener trainees are required to participate in a minimum of forty hours of basic training, score 80% on the final exam, and fulfill 50 hours of volunteer service. Qualifications, requirements, and steps to become a certified Penn State Master Gardener are included in the Policy Statement below.

Advanced Certificate Program

The Master Gardener Advanced Certificate Program provides in-depth training in specialized areas of horticulture. This training prepares Master Gardeners to become more proficient in answering gardening questions. Master Gardeners are also encouraged to share the knowledge they have gained to educate the residents in their communities; however, no additional volunteer service hours are required for those earning advanced certification. All Advanced Certificate Program courses qualify as Master Gardener continuing education hours. In addition to the Woody Plant Identification course, future offerings being considered include Herbaceous Plants and Weeds and Invasive Plants.
