Native Plant Demonstration Garden Brings Beauty and More to Mercer County

Penn State Extension Mercer County Master Gardeners Native Plant Garden
If you're driving along Route 19 in Mercer, you might have noticed a colorful garden taking shape at 463 North Perry Highway. The Penn State Extension Mercer County Master Gardeners have planted this Native Plant Demonstration Garden to show how beautiful and practical native plants can be in local landscapes.
The garden features plants that naturally thrive in our area while supporting local wildlife. You'll find rudbeckia, verbena, liatris, and lobelia - all chosen because they resist deer and attract beneficial pollinators. These plants create an attractive display that peaks in late summer.
Each year, around August and early September, Mercer County Master Gardeners host walks through the garden. It's a great chance to ask questions about choosing and caring for native plants, or just to enjoy the garden at its best. The volunteers are always happy to share what they've learned about growing these plants successfully.
There are some upcoming improvements in the works, too. Plans include upgrading the on-site greenhouse with further beautification and water access by Spring 2025, and developing programs to help young people learn about gardening. For example, we've partnered with a 4-H club to create a beautiful pollinator garden and are planning an additional native plant garden this coming year.
The Mercer County Master Gardener native and pollinator plant gardens demonstrate how plants can create an attractive, low-maintenance landscape that benefits our local environment. Stop by sometime to discover inspiration for your own yard!
