Penn State Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by Penn State Extension and provide educational resources and guidance to the community by answering home gardening questions, presenting educational information, participating in community engagement projects or events, maintaining demonstration gardens, and educating the community about plant science and horticulture.
Training for new Master Gardeners in Armstrong County will be October 2024-March 2025. Master Gardener trainees are required to participate in a minimum of 40 hours of classroom training, score 80 percent on the midterm and final exam, and complete 50 hours of volunteer service.
- The course topics include botany, plant propagation, soil health and fertilizer management, composting, controlling pests safely, entomology, plant diseases, indoor plants, vegetables, tree and small fruits, lawn care, pruning, woody ornamentals, herbaceous plants, native plants, weeds and invasives, and landscape design.
- Classes will be offered online via Zoom.
- Internet connection and a computer, tablet, or smartphone are required to complete the course.
- The cost of the training course is $200, which includes the Master Gardener Manual (textbook), handouts, hands-on materials, and training provided by expert speakers and specialists on the topics covered in the course.
