Summary:
Penn Soil RC&D Council, a regional non-profit agency serving eight counties in Northwestern PA, seeks to hire an Engineering Student Trainee. This position will be a 1 term appointment, not to exceed 120-days during the Summer of 2020. There is no guarantee of continued employment beyond the Summer 2020 Term. The Student Trainee will be employed by Penn Soil RC&D but will work with and be supervised by the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The primary purpose of this position will be to assist the engineering team in the planning, design, and construction of various soil and water conservation structures while simultaneously learning about the RC&D Council and the NRCS.
The Applicant shall be currently enrolled in at least part-time, and in good academic standing, in an institution of higher education; and making satisfactory progress towards receipt of a baccalaureate or graduate degree in an Agricultural, Civil, Environmental, or other Engineering Program.
Details:
This position will offer the applicant a chance to work alongside experienced NRCS employees to expand their technical engineering knowledge while also learning about this Agency. Day to day work activities may include assistance with calculations, drafting, topographic surveying, and construction quality assurance for the implementation of conservation practices. The conservation practices may include, but are not limited to: grassed waterways, diversions, water control structures, stream crossings, spring developments, livestock watering systems, heavy use area protection, wastewater treatment systems, manure storage facilities, and timber roof structures. The duty station for this position is the USDA-NRCS Clarion Technical Office in Clarion, PA.
Work items include a mix of office and field work. The successful applicant must have a reliable form of personal transportation (mileage is reimbursed) to travel to field sites. Approximately 25% of work will be field visits and 75% in the office. A majority of the field work would be within a 50-mile radius although limited travel may occur beyond that distance.
The qualified candidate must meet the following requirements:

Current student working towards a baccalaureate or graduate degree in an Agricultural or Civil Engineering Program as previously stated.

Must have a valid state driver’s license and reliable form of transportation. Mileage reimbursement is available with proper documentation.

Summer housing and travel to/from work is the responsibility of the applicant.

Time Commitment: Up to 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday work week. This position is for the summer of 2020 with total time not to exceed 120-days, there will be no implication of future employment beyond this. Salary is contingent on experience with a starting wage rate range of $12.00 to $14.00 per hour.
