Elaine Dorney and Dr. Shonah Hunter successfully completed basic training this past year and were awarded their Penn State Extension Master Gardener certificates at a dinner celebration on the evening of October 1, 2024.

Master Gardeners are volunteers dedicated to Penn State Extension's mission to educate the public on environmental stewardship and sustainable horticulture utilizing research-based information. Master Gardener Basic training runs from October through March and involves 40 hours of weekly online webinars, chapter readings, and hands-on workshops by Penn State Extension Horticultural Educators and Master Gardeners. Apprentices are also required to complete 50 additional hours of training by working alongside certified Master Gardener mentors to teach and educate community residents on best practices in home gardening.
