Assistant/Associate Professor, Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering Safety and Health for Agricultural and Biorenewable Industries

This position is endowed under the title “Nationwide Insurance Professor of Agricultural Safety & Health”. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the area of safety and health, with emphasis on eliminating safety hazards, reducing injuries and fatalities, and improving worker health across the spectrum of production agriculture and agricultural/biorenewable systems. This can include machinery, animal, and plant systems; processing facilities, and human capital and management systems. The appointment split is proposed to be 60% extension, 28% research, and 12% teaching.

The extension and research program will focus on the integration of applications of engineering and technology solutions to hazards and risks, theory-based educational approaches to safety education, and the promotion of safety and health best management practices to reduce exposure to hazards and risk in agricultural and biorenewable industries.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the instruction of one course, BRS 426, Safety and Health in Agriculture and Biorenewable Industries (3 credits).

The successful candidate will be expected to build on an existing internationally recognized extension and research program in agricultural safety and health. Strong extension and research collaborations within the department and with faculty in other departments and colleges, as well as nationally and internationally are expected. Securing external grant support for collaborative projects is imperative. The candidate will be expected to advise and mentor graduate students as part of the extension and research components of the position.

Candidate must have a Ph.D. in agricultural or mechanical engineering, agricultural technology, agricultural education, industrial safety, ergonomics, safety and health management, public health, social-behavioral science, or a related safety or health field, with a solid core of knowledge of agricultural production, agribusiness, and agricultural supporting services. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Experience with managing projects and teams is required. Ability to communicate effectively, to provide creative leadership, and to work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and industry and agency groups is paramount. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university, as well as the public served by the extension program, is required.
