Research Associate Fixed Term - Michigan State University

Michigan State University invites applicants to apply for a Research Associate – Fixed Term position (Job No: 510938) in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. This is a full-time annual (AN) appointment for one year. The principal duties of this position will be to conduct research regarding the transport of nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus (N and P), in drainage water from farmland. The primary focus will be on phosphorus. The research associate will assess the dynamics of phosphorus transport from a subsurface-drained farm (conventional free drainage) under various managements including no-till with manure application and strip-till with commercial fertilizer. The assessment of the P dynamics will be done by the state-of-the-art continuous phosphate sensor of HydroCycle PO4. This position will include travel to the research site (Lenawee County, Michigan) to collect HydroCycle PO4 data. Specific responsibilities include but not limited to assisting with some field data collection, assisting with some fieldwork, analyzing flow and nutrient data, HydroCycle PO4 data processing and analysis, DRAINMOD application for flow and N, and writing peer-reviewed journal articles. A Ph.D. in Agricultural/Biosystems, Hydrology, Water Resources or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Research experience in drainage water quality, DRAINMOD applications, drainage conservation practices of controlled drainage or a saturated buffer would be preferred.

The initial appointment is for one year, with annual renewal based on performance and funding availability.
