Digital Agriculture

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (https://baen.tamu.edu/) and Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center-Dallas (https://dallas.tamu.edu/) are seeking a highly motivated individual to join as a Ph.D. student. The incumbent will work primarily in one of the following areas: artificial intelligence (AI), machine vision, robotics, and IoT systems, applied towards automation, autonomous robots, and other digital technologies for controlled environment agriculture (CEA). During the first year, the student will be at the main campus in College Station for coursework and then move to AgriLife Research Center in Dallas for research.

The research will include but is not limited to:
• Developing integrated hardware and software for embedded AI-driven robotic/mechatronic systems for applications in CEA.
• Application of novel machine/deep learning methodologies for automation of the CEA facilities.
• Designing and implementing research studies, collecting, and analyzing data, and assisting the group in preparing research results for publication.
• Assisting in other projects in the group and writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.
• Presentation (oral and poster) of research results in scientific meetings and conferences.

Required Qualifications:
• BS or MS degree in Agricultural/Biosystems/Mechanical/Mechatronics/Computer/Electrical or closely related engineering discipline.
• Experience with one or more programming languages (Python, C/C++, Matlab, etc.,).
• CAD modeling (SolidWorks), and fabrication experience are desired.
• Ability to learn/adopt skills and knowledge in solving “real-world” problems.
• Creative and independent research abilities with teamwork spirit.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Preference will be given to the candidate holding an MS degree with peer-reviewed publications in one of the following areas: machine vision (RGB/hyper-spectral), AI, embedded systems, robotics, autonomous systems, IoT, and/or other digital agriculture technologies.
• Experience working in CEA facilities such as greenhouse, high-tunnel, plant factory, etc., is preferred.
