Food Systems

The Allegheny County Extension Office of Penn State is looking for a summer intern interested in advancing strong regional food systems.  The work of the Ag Entrepreneurship and Community Economic Development staff brings diverse food-related sectors together to examine, develop, and improve the food system in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and Western Pennsylvania food system.

Projects may include conducting research, writing reports, newsletters blog posts, assisting in the creation of educational material and program support including outreach and marketing strategies, and other projects as required. Candidates must have the ability to communicate clearly and translate complex information for a variety of audiences, be highly organized, and be able to manage projects independently and collaboratively. Generally, the work brings diverse food-related sectors together to examine, develop, and improve the food system in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and Western Pennsylvania food system.  Specifically, the summer work program will center on providing technical assistance, education, momentum, and support on issues related to food production, food access, food distribution, health and nutrition, and community development.

Requirements: Junior or Senior. This summer work opportunity will be for the period mid-May through mid-August, approximately 30 hours per week. This work can be used either as an internship or independent study. Pay is commensurate with years of study - $13 (junior); $14 (senior) per hour.
