Urban Forestry

The Penn State Extension Office of Allegheny County is looking for a summer intern interested in urban forestry. A student in forestry, horticulture or a related field is needed to assist in conducting tree inventories in the Allegheny County Parks. To date, this work has been completed for four county parks. The intern will work to collect data on park trees using GIS based handheld computers.

The intern should have good tree identification skills and should have a basic understanding of urban forestry, arboriculture, and how to evaluate the health, structure, and condition of urban trees (additional training will be provided).  Basic GIS and database skills will be helpful.  The interns should be able to work independently with little supervision but will report back regularly.  In addition to collecting tree inventory data, the intern will assist with analyzing the data and preparing reports for the County.  There may be opportunities to collaborate on other green projects.

A personal vehicle is needed for transportation to the worksites. Mileage for travel will be reimbursed by Allegheny County.

Requirements: Junior or Senior. This summer work opportunity will be for the period mid-May through mid-August, approximately 30 hours per week. This work can be used either as an internship or independent study. Pay is commensurate with years of study - $13 (junior); $14 (senior) per hour.
