Summer Position Pittsburgh - Energy Innovation Center

Urban Ag and Resource Development

The Penn State Extension Office of Allegheny County has been working tirelessly over the past several years to enhance/promote/develop urban Ag opportunities in Western PA as well as identify increased funding opportunities. The summer student intern will assist with program and funding coordination efforts with relevant Ag faculty and the Assistant Director of Programs and Educators of the Ag Entrepreneurship and Economic Community Development Team related to the proposed Hilltop Farm. This farm is on the former St. Clair Village public housing site and once developed will be the largest urban farm in the country. This initiative is in partnership with the community partner, the Hilltop Alliance.

Second, this position will assist with an additional food systems technical assistance funding request to the Howard Heinz Endowments conditioned on the recommendations of the final grant report on the status of USDA funding in Western PA (due the end of March, 2018). Third, the summer student intern will support an ongoing internal project researching potential funding sources to expand Urban Ag and Food Systems in both Western PA and the Commonwealth.

Requirements: Junior or Senior. This summer work opportunity will be for the period mid-May through mid-August, approximately 30 hours per week. This work can be used either as an internship or independent study. Pay is commensurate with years of study - $13 (junior); $14 (senior) per hour.
