Aleo BME is a biomaterials start-up based in State College, PA that is commercializing metabolite-inspired technologies developed at the Pennsylvania State University. “BME” stands for “biology, medicine, and environment” and is an acronym that captures the breadth of industries and products to which Aleo BME’s proprietary materials may be applied. Aleo BME has submitted 510Ks for multiple Class II medical devices and is expanding its technology portfolio to include first-in-class bioadhesives for surgical applications and bioactive, agricultural seed coating.

Position: Part-time Agricultural Scientist

The ideal candidate will/is;

  • A post-doc or an individual holding or pursuing an MS or PhD in an agricultural science with a strong background in plant biology/biochemistry
  • Have strong entrepreneurial interests in biotech, biomaterials, sustainable agriculture, etc.
  • Experience managing controlled greenhouse experiments, particularly for soy bean
  • A familiarity with seed coating products and plant chelation treatments, such as EDTA is strongly desired
  • Familiarity with quick, accurate plant health assessment assays and an ability to design protocols to fit experiments and quantify
  • plant performance and characteristics
  • Conduct plant material preparation, sample collection, and subsequent ICP-MS analysis of micronutrient content
  • Quantify early stage growth markers in respective plants, ie. VE, VC, V1, V2, etc.
  • Provide plants with proper irrigation, NPK supplements, pest management, etc. while strictly controlling micronutrient addition
  • Work closely with Aleo BME’s polymer formulation scientists to coat seeds with lead polymer candidates
  • Help to develop and optimize seed coating methodology, scale seed coating process to ~10 kg
  • Able to provide their own transport from Innovation Park to nearby greenhouse facilities
  • Open to potential full-time employment following seed coating project completion
