Extension Associate, Precision Agriculture

Appointment: 75% Extension / 25% Research

Location: Edisto Research and Education Center (Blackville, SC)

Clemson University has a team in place at Edisto Research & Education Center (REC) in Blackville, SC for addressing research, extension, and education needs in precision agriculture. The team includes the following faculty positions: Precision Agriculture Engineer, Sensor Engineer, Irrigation Specialist, and Precision Nutrient Specialist. The many other faculty disciplines represented at Edisto REC create valuable and unique opportunities for interdisciplinary  collaboration. Expertise represented in other faculty and specialist positions at Edisto REC include: agricultural engineering, entomology, feed grains production, forage and livestock production, horticulture and vegetable production,  nematology, peanut production, plant nutrition, plant pathology, and weed science. The Clemson Precision Agriculture team also works closely with faculty, agents, and staff on campus, at statewide research & education centers, and at county offices to introduce, evaluate, develop, and assess technologies and strategies for addressing needs of South Carolina producers.

Clemson University is seeking a highly qualified individual for an Extension Associate position in Precision Agriculture. This is a full-time, permanent position stationed at Edisto Research & Education Center. This individual will serve the agricultural community statewide and develop a nationally recognized Precision Agriculture Extension program in collaboration with other Clemson University faculty. The primary focus areas will be in row crop production and irrigation technologies, with additional efforts anticipated in application of technologies and strategies for beef cattle, forage, vegetable, and fruit production.

DUTIES:

  • Develop and deliver formal and informal precision agriculture training and education programs for South Carolina producers and Extension agents. Programs should focus primarily on application of new and existing precision agriculture technologies and concepts for crop production and irrigation systems with emphasis on maximizing profits, mitigating risks, or environmental stewardship. Program delivery should utilize a combination of the following or related mechanisms, as appropriate: on-farm tests and demonstrations, workshops, field days, printed and electronic educational materials, and social media. This individual will be responsible for coordinating and editing a monthly “Precision Ag Newsletter” that includes the efforts of everyone on the Precision Ag Team. (70%)
  • Collaborate with precision agriculture researchers in developing new technologies and delivering them to end users.Participation in authorship of academic publications is expected. (20%)
  • Obtain funding in support of Extension programming. (10%)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred. One or more degrees are required in one of the following: Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Mechanization, Agricultural Systems, Agricultural Technology, Agronomy, Biosystems Engineering, or closely
related field. Working knowledge of commercially available precision agriculture technologies and software solutions is required. Delivery and execution of Extension programming requires excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work well independently, with others, and as a member of a team is expected.
