The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (BBE) at the University of Minnesota seeks candidates for a 9-month tenure-track assistant professor position with research and Extension (40/60) responsibilities.

Minnesota is a national leader in animal production, with the state leading the country in turkey production, 3rd in pork production, 8th in milk production, and a growing cow-calf and feedlot beef industry. The University of Minnesota’s robust research and Extension programs have a long history of developing and delivering cutting edge research and education to farmers and other stakeholders. The person in this faculty position will address a critical need for engineering expertise in the broad area of sustainable animal agriculture systems. Knowledge in animal housing and structural design, renewable energy, energy use and conservation, environmental control of the indoor air (ventilation, heating, and cooling), biosecurity, human/animal safety and welfare, air emissions management including odor, hazardous and greenhouse gases and particulate matter, and sustainable manure management is relevant and welcomed. The person in this position will work with both the public and private sectors to develop new technologies and guidelines for improving productivity while reducing negative environmental impacts. This faculty member will help Minnesota maintain its strong leadership position in sustainable animal agricultural production.

This position is one of the tenure-track positions generated by the Agricultural Research, Education, Extension and Technology Transfer (AGREETT) program. The AGREETT program invests in agricultural research, education, and Extension by hiring new faculty members to work in key areas of agricultural production.

The person in this position is expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research and Extension program, seek and secure extramural research funding from state and national competitive grant programs and develop an independent research program of basic and applied research. The person will also be expected to participate in collaborative research activities. The University of Minnesota offers opportunities to work with engineers, agricultural scientists, animal scientists, veterinarians and other faculty on campus and a network of Research and Outreach Centers across the state. The faculty member in this position will also be expected to be a leader in Extension program development in sustainable animal agricultural systems in Minnesota, provide effective Extension education and scholarship. Other faculty responsibilities include advising graduate students and service commitments to the department, college, University, and the profession.

Required: Engineering degree or equivalent and earned PhD in biological systems, agricultural, environmental or related engineering field. Research experience in sustainable animal agricultural systems important in Minnesota.
Preferred: Preference will be given to candidates with: a strong peer reviewed publication record and experience with Extension and outreach product/publication development; evidence of abilities to work collaboratively on multidisciplinary projects; evidence of potential to develop and manage interdisciplinary research and Extension programs at the forefront of the discipline; evidence of effective teaching with diverse audiences and excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated experience in obtaining external funding; interest in, experience with, and commitment to diversity and inclusiveness; and either Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or professional engineer (PE) registration.
